Questioning exam: night sweats, irritability, strong stress in life especially at the time of onset, dark circles under eyes, cold hands and feet, tendency toward constipation, wakes 1x at PM to urinate, PMS – mood swings, breast sensitivity, period – dark clots and cramps, heavy flow.

Medical History: Severe pain, edema and stiffness of various joints which were symmetrical and typical of RA. Joints affected included ankles, knees, hips, fingers, wrists, jaw, elbows and shoulders. Patient’s mobility was very poor and she needed considerable help with her personal needs. All activities were painful, the majority severely.

Medical History: Patient shot competitive target archery as a teen and wore shoulder joint out. He shot 3+ hours per day 7 months out of the year for 9 years

Questioning exam: Left shoulder was painful, described as an ache that worsened with cold and damp. There was lots of popping and grinding in shoulder joint. There was limited range of motion.

Traditional Asian Medicine for Shoulder Pain

Chief Complaint: Right shoulder pain for 2 months.

Medical History: In two months ago, he started a new job where he does a tremendous amount of lifting and balancing of heavy doors and cabinets. He feels sharp and stabbing pain over his right upper trapezius muscle and around his shoulder joint when he moves his shoulder in abduction. He feels better after a massage and hot Epsom salt baths but nothing has totally relieved his pain. Physical exam revealed pain and tenderness on palpation of the right upper trapezius, biceps brachii tendon, deltoid, pectoralis minor insertion and all of the neck muscles especially the scalenes and posterior muscle group.

Western Diagnosis: Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Medical History: Patient is a 82 year old male. He has had back pain for over 10 years. Relevant symptoms include achy, radiating sensation down the anterior right thigh and leg. Numbness and tingling in both feet. Major pain is at the right sacral area at the PSIS. It is tender to the touch. He has had back surgery, laminectomy of the L2,3 and 4 vertebrea. Left knee replacement 7 years ago and right hip replacement 15 years ago. he complains of no pain any where else in the body.

Medical History: 52 year old female, thin body type. Runs 5-7 miles, 3-5 times per week for exercise. Menstruation ceased three years previously.

Questioning exam: Orthopedic physician diagnosed plantar fasciitis. NSAIDs, rest, shoe inserts and physical therapy stretching regimen offered little relief.

Pulse exam: Pulse is thin, moderately strong, moderately slow. Both third positions and Liver position are weakest.

Acupuncture and Herb for Hip and Knee Pain

Chief Complaint: Left Hip and Knee pain

Medical History: Pain started after having gallbladder and right Kidney removed. After right kidney was removed patient had an infected scar and was put on anti-inflammatory drugs for some time, during which there was no pain. Once off drugs pain returned. Patient (F 59) was checked for rheumatoid arthritis and negative, arthritis was also ruled out, and was recommended to visit an acupuncturist. No prior pain to operations. On hypertension drugs also, blood pressure is under control.
