@algancao – On the Season of Yangming

I love the smell of yangming in the morning. Weather in Santa Monica, warm, dry, breezy. Deep blue skies and a general sense of life.
Fans of Chinese medicine will recall that there aren’t really 12 acupuncture channels but six that have branches that enter the hand & foot.
The Shang Han Lun (written 200 ce) organizes diseases into six channels. shaoyang, taiyang, and yangming (little, big, and bright yang).
The other three channels according to “On Cold Diseases” (SHL) are shaoyin, taiyin, and jueyin (little, big, and terminal yin).
One chapter of the SHL describes the times of day when different diseases will get worse or better. SHL breaks the day up into six portions.
This isn’t the usual 12 channel circadian clock taught. I think that version is too man-made, the 6 ch. of SHL is more intuitive to me.
Shaoyang (little yang) is the sun rise, when yang is still little. If worse at sunrise consider treating the gallbladder or triple burner.
Taiyang (big yang) is around noon when the sun is at its brightest. “Taiyang” is actually “The Sun” in Mandarin.
Yangming (yang brightness) is the late afternoon when “ultimate yang becomes yin” or turns in to evening.
Shaoyin (little yin) is the early evening. Shaoyin is heart/kidney channels. Early evening hot flashes? Regulate water and fire.
Taiyin (big yin) is around midnight. Midnight snacks damage the Spleen. (The idea of getting up to eat at midnight is so foreign to me.)
Jueyin (terminal yin) is when ultimate yin is preparing to become yang. Many Liver problems are worse during the wee-hours of the morning.
Early AM insomnia, plus planning one’s day, think Jueyin/Liver – Suan Zao Ren Tang for that.
The year too can be broken up into six phases. Late summer/early autumn is yangming. The hottest dryest part of the year.
For some reason, no doubt due to my general Stomach deficiency, I like yangming part of the day and year best. Tis the season now!
I love the smell of yangming in the morning. Weather in Santa Monica, warm, dry, breezy. No wildfires… yet.
